There are two styles types of vaping...
- MTL = Tighter draw, coil ohm 1.0 or higher
- DL (aka: Subohm) = Looser draw, more clouds, coil ohm .9 or lower
A setup contains 5 main components...
- Mod
- Battery
- Tank
- Coil
- Eliquid / ejuice
What you need to know about the Mod...
- The mod is the main component of any Vape. It’s the device that holds either the internal or external battery. It also contains all the buttons or screen for operating the device.
- First you need to know what the minimum ohm resistance of your mod is. What that means, is the lowest ohm coil your device is capable of handling. You can put any tank you want on the mod so long as the coil ohms are above the Mods minimum ohm resistance. (Never put a tank on a mod without knowing the mods minimum ohm resistance.)
- The mod controls the wattage or temperature of the vape.
- What type of battery does the mod take or is it an internal battery? There are 1000's of options on the market today. My preference is single 18650 or internal battery mods.
What you need to know about the Battery…
- BATTERY SAFETY IS CRITICAL! Let me repeat that BATTERY SAFETY IS CRITICAL!! Please refer to Mooch for all questions about battery safety and limitations. Mooch on the Vaping Underground / Mooch on ECF
- Be sure to handle your batteries properly. NEVER PUT A BATTERY IN YOUR POCKET or PURSE WHERE IT CAN CONTACT OTHER METAL… IT CAN EXPLODE!
- Battery Mah is the life length of the battery. The higher the Mah, the longer the battery lasts between charges.
- For use in Vaping it is recommended that your battery be a minimum of 20 amp continuous (For more info refer to Mooch’s links above).
- An internal battery is typically lithium and can range anywhere from 400 Mah to 5500 Mah. It cannot be removed or exchanged from the mod. This would include Pods and Egos.
- 18650 / 20700 / 21700 / 26650 batteries are separate from the device and are typically charged outside the mod on a battery charger. Chargers I recommend: eFest LUC V4 or the Nitecore Intellicharger i4.
What you need to know about the Tank…
- The Tank is the part of your setup that holds the eliquid. It screws into the 510 or Ego connection on the top of the mod.
- Typically they are comprised of Metal, glass, drip tip, and a coil.
- Tanks range in style and size. They can hold anywhere from 2 to 8 mls of eliquid.
- Choosing a tank is a matter of personal preference. But be sure to know your mods minimum ohm resistance when picking the coil ohm for your tank.
- I do recommend a tank with factory made coils for all beginners. This is the simplest starting setup, and less overwhelming.
- When you purchase a tank, be sure to order extra coils with it. (Something like the Kanger Toptank... extra coils come in 5 packs and run about $10-14. These coils typically last about 2 weeks of steady use.)
What you need to know about the Coil…
- The Coil is the springy metal, ceramic, or mesh component that heats and vaporizes the eliquid. They come in numerous ohm levels and a variety of metals.
- You can purchase factory made coils or make them yourself (Typically only done when using an RDA).
- Most coils are proprietary to a single tank. However, some coils (like the Aspire Atlantis coils) can be used in other tanks that they were not designed for.
- The majority of factory made coils will either be NiCr, Kanthal, or Stainless Steel (Do not use NiCr coils if you are allergic to Nickel.)
- With the variety of today's tanks, a coil head can contain a single coil on up to the more advanced 8 coils.
- Coils need to be primed...
- Assemble and fill the tank.
- After the coil has sat in the filled tank for a few minutes and is FULLY

SATURATED... you start at a low wattage and fire the mod a couple times.
- Repeat this process several more times increasing the wattage a little each time
until you reach the preferred vaping wattage.
- Be sure to stay below or within the manufacturers recommended wattage for your coil.
- Once you have burnt a cotton coil, kiss it goodbye. You will NEVER get that burnt taste out.
- Change your coil when the juice no longer tastes good or burnt after a period of use. Depending on the eliquid, device settings, and amount of use this could range anywhere from 4/5 days to a month.
What you need to know about Eliquid / Ejuice…

- Choosing your eliquid is completely by taste preference but here are a couple main points.
- If you choose a MTL setup, you're going to want an eliquid that has a higher PG ratio. Usually 50PG/50VG or higher PG.
- If you choose a DL setup, you'll want the opposite, higher VG content. Typically 30PG/70VG or higher VG.
- Most people start by choosing eliquids that are things they eat/drink in real life. But watch out for cherry or chocolate, they don't translate well in vapes.
- Recommended Nicotine content:
- DL - 0mg - 6mg
- Nic Salts are used primarily in the newer closed POD systems. They are much
higher in concentration and should not be confused with the regular nic that is
in most eliquids.
