CountryPami's Juicy Rack Gets a Makeover!

It was time for the juicy rack to get a makeover. Most juice bottles sold today no longer fit in the previous racks. (See CountryPami's Juicy Rack for previous versions of the racks and the story behind it all.)  So once again I went on a hunt for the perfect way to store it all. A media cabinet turned out to be the perfect solution... only 9 inches deep, 7 inches of space between the 4 adjustable shelves, 6 inches at top and bottom shelves, and 48" high. It fits on top of my desk without taking up the whole desktop. I purchased mine on Amazon, however at the time of this writing it was out of stock. But this gives you an idea to start from if you're looking for a new way to store all that vape gear and juice.

Vaping 101

There are two styles types of vaping...
  • MTL = Tighter draw, coil ohm 1.0 or higher
  • DL (aka: Subohm) = Looser draw, more clouds, coil ohm .9 or lower

A setup contains 5 main components...

  1. Mod
  2. Battery
  3. Tank
  4. Coil
  5. Eliquid / ejuice

What you need to know about the Mod...

  • The mod is the main component of any Vape. It’s the device that holds either the internal or external battery. It also contains all the buttons or screen for operating the device.
  • First you need to know what the minimum ohm resistance of your mod is. What that means, is the lowest ohm coil your device is capable of handling. You can put any tank you want on the mod so long as the coil ohms are above the Mods minimum ohm resistance. (Never put a tank on a mod without knowing the mods minimum ohm resistance.)
  • The mod controls the wattage or temperature of the vape.
  • What type of battery does the mod take or is it an internal battery? There are 1000's of options on the market today. My preference is single 18650 or internal battery mods.

What you need to know about the Battery

  • BATTERY SAFETY IS CRITICAL! Let me repeat that BATTERY SAFETY IS CRITICAL!! Please refer to Mooch for all questions about battery safety and limitations.   Mooch on the Vaping Underground  /  Mooch on ECF
  • Be sure to handle your batteries properly.  NEVER PUT A BATTERY IN YOUR POCKET or PURSE WHERE IT CAN CONTACT OTHER METAL… IT CAN EXPLODE!
  • Battery Mah is the life length of the battery. The higher the Mah, the longer the battery lasts between charges.
  • For use in Vaping it is recommended that your battery be a minimum of 20 amp continuous (For more info refer to Mooch’s links above).
  • An internal battery is typically lithium and can range anywhere from 400 Mah to 5500 Mah. It cannot be removed or exchanged from the mod. This would include Pods and Egos.
  • 18650 / 20700 / 21700 / 26650 batteries are separate from the device and are typically charged outside the mod on a battery charger.  Chargers I recommend: eFest LUC V4 or the Nitecore Intellicharger i4.

What you need to know about the Tank
  • The Tank is the part of your setup that holds the eliquid. It screws into the 510 or Ego connection on the top of the mod.
  • Typically they are comprised of Metal, glass, drip tip, and a coil.
  • Tanks range in style and size. They can hold anywhere from 2 to 8 mls of eliquid.
  • Choosing a tank is a matter of personal preference. But be sure to know your mods minimum ohm resistance when picking the coil ohm for your tank.
  • I do recommend a tank with factory made coils for all beginners. This is the simplest starting setup, and less overwhelming.
  • When you purchase a tank, be sure to order extra coils with it.  (Something like the Kanger Toptank... extra coils come in 5 packs and run about $10-14. These coils typically last about 2 weeks of steady use.)

What you need to know about the Coil
  • The Coil is the springy metal, ceramic, or mesh component that heats and vaporizes the eliquid. They come in numerous ohm levels and a variety of metals.
  • You can purchase factory made coils or make them yourself (Typically only done when using an RDA).
  • Most coils are proprietary to a single tank. However, some coils (like the Aspire Atlantis coils) can be used in other tanks that they were not designed for.
  • The majority of factory made coils will either be NiCr, Kanthal, or Stainless Steel (Do not use NiCr coils if you are allergic to Nickel.)
  • With the variety of today's tanks, a coil head can contain a single coil on up to the more advanced 8 coils.
  • Coils need to be primed...
           - To prime a coil you add a couple drops of eliquid straight into the coil.
           - Assemble and fill the tank.
           - After the coil has sat in the filled tank for a few minutes and is FULLY
SATURATED... you start at a low wattage and fire the mod a couple times.
           - Repeat this process several more times increasing the wattage a little each time
until you reach the preferred vaping wattage.
  • Be sure to stay below or within the manufacturers recommended wattage for your coil.
  • Once you have burnt a cotton coil, kiss it goodbye. You will NEVER get that burnt taste out.
  • Change your coil when the juice no longer tastes good or burnt after a period of use. Depending on the eliquid, device settings, and amount of use this could range anywhere from 4/5 days to a month.

What you need to know about Eliquid / Ejuice
  • What is in eliquid / ejuice… http://countrypami.blogspot.com/p/whats-in-eliquid.html
  • Choosing your eliquid is completely by taste preference but here are a couple main points.
  • If you choose a MTL setup, you're going to want an eliquid that has a higher PG ratio. Usually 50PG/50VG or higher PG.
  • If you choose a DL setup, you'll want the opposite, higher VG content. Typically 30PG/70VG or higher VG.
  • Most people start by choosing eliquids that are things they eat/drink in real life. But watch out for cherry or chocolate, they don't translate well in vapes.
  • Recommended Nicotine content:
           - MTL - typically 12mg - 24mg
           - DL - 0mg - 6mg
           - Nic Salts are used primarily in the newer closed POD systems. They are much
higher in concentration and should not be confused with the regular nic that is
             in most eliquids.

You can find the setups I recommend to beginners here on my blog:
http://countrypami.blogspot.com/p/countrypamis-gear.html

Recommended Gear and eliquid vendors are listed on the right hand side of my main blog page.

I also highly recommend that if you're gonna give this a serious go, get a backup setup. You'll want to have another setup available while one is charging or in case of device/tank failure.

Why Are Mod Designs So Masculine and Futuristic?

I don't often make a post of a personal nature... but I've been noticing this issue for quite some time now and decided to post it up here for all to see.

Why are mod designs so masculine and futuristic?  No offense to the gents out there, I'm sure y'all love the designs.  But, where are the prettier, fancier, blingier (is that a word?) mods for the ladies????

I love getting new mods, but I am sick to death of them all being these unattractive, boxy, futuristic, robotic, techno designs.  Not to mention the same 6 bold colors... silver, black, grey, blue, red, and green.  Once in a while they'll throw a purple into the mix.  Well, really it's fuscia, but China calls it purple.

The current market designs weigh very heavily to the masculine side... probably 90% masculine and only 10% more feminine designs.  Has the industry forgotten that WOMEN VAPE TOO?  That some of us lady vapers might like a more feminine, fancier mod?  Why not some softer shapes, fancy laser etching, a few blingy stones, some glittery paint, or some pastel colors?  What lady wants to go to a fancy special event, wedding, or out on a date with something that looks like it came out of a 22nd century spaceship in her hand?!?  I sure as heck don't!

So there ya have it... that's how I feel... I hope I'm not alone in feeling this way.  Hopefully some of the mod manufacturers like Kangertech, Innokin, eLeaf, Aspire, or Smok will get it together and make something a little more special for us lady vapers.

American Cancer Society Releases Position Statement on E-Cigs

The American Cancer Society just released the below position statement on e-cigs. This is a HUGE step forward in our fight to prove how much less harmful Vaping is than smoking!
You can view the original statement HERE.

============

"American Cancer Society Position Statement on Electronic Cigarettes
The American Cancer Society Board of Directors approved the following position statement on electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in February 2018. The position statement will be used to guide ACS’s tobacco control and cessation efforts as it relates to these products.

ACS Position Statement on Electronic Cigarettes
Combustible tobacco products, primarily cigarettes, are the single greatest cause of cancer and kill about 7 million people worldwide each year.  In the United States, 98% of all tobacco-related deaths are caused by cigarette smoking.  The U.S. tobacco landscape has changed rapidly in recent years, with millions of consumers now using electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), the most prominent of which are electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes).  E-cigarettes contain heated nicotine extracted from tobacco, as well as a variety of flavorings and other additives.

Scientific Summary: Based on currently available evidence, using current generation e-cigarettes is less harmful than smoking cigarettes, but the health effects of long-term use are not known.  The American Cancer Society (the ACS) recognizes our responsibility to closely monitor and synthesize scientific knowledge about the effects of all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and any new products derived from tobacco.  As new evidence emerges, the ACS will promptly report these findings to policy makers, the public and clinicians.

Clinical Recommendations: The ACS has always supported any smoker who is considering quitting, no matter what approach they use; there is nothing more important that they can do for their health.  To help smokers quit, the ACS recommends that clinicians advise their patients to use FDA-approved cessation aids that have been proven to support successful quit attempts. Many smokers choose to quit smoking without the assistance of a clinician and some opt to use e-cigarettes to accomplish this goal. The ACS recommends that clinicians support all attempts to quit the use of combustible tobacco and work with smokers to eventually stop using any tobacco product, including e-cigarettes.  Some smokers, despite firm clinician advice, will not attempt to quit smoking cigarettes and will not use FDA approved cessation mediations.  These individuals should be encouraged to switch to the least harmful form of tobacco product possible; switching to the exclusive use of e-cigarettes is preferable to continuing to smoke combustible products.  Of course, these individuals should be regularly advised to completely quit using all tobacco products.  The ACS strongly discourages the concurrent (or “dual”) use of e-cigarettes and combustible cigarettes, a behavior that is far more detrimental to a person’s health compared to the substantial health benefit of quitting smoking.

Policy Recommendations: The American Cancer Society recommends implementing polices and public health measures known to prevent the initiation and use of all tobacco products, including appropriate taxation, retail policies (e.g., raising the minimum age of purchase to 21), tobacco and e-cigarette aerosol-free policies and funding of evidence-based prevention and cessation programs.  The ACS strongly recommends that every effort be made to prevent the initiation of e-cigarettes by youth.  The use of products containing nicotine in any form among youth is unsafe and can harm brain development. Furthermore, evidence indicates that young e-cigarette users are at increased risk for both starting to smoke and becoming long-term users of combustible tobacco products.

The ACS encourages the FDA to regulate all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to the full extent of its authority, and to determine the absolute and relative harms of each product.  The FDA should assess whether e-cigarettes help to reduce tobacco-related morbidity and mortality, and the impact of marketing of e-cigarettes on consumer perceptions and behavior.  Any related regulatory regime should include post-marketing surveillance to monitor the long-term effects of these products and ensure the FDA’s actions have the intended health outcome of significantly reducing disease and death.  Furthermore, the FDA should use its authorities to reduce the toxicity, addictiveness and appeal of tobacco products currently on the market.  The ACS also applauds the FDA for recognizing its significant role as a science-based agency in helping to address the addictiveness of nicotine in cigarettes.  Reducing nicotine in all combustible tobacco products to below addictive levels holds the potential to significantly accelerate reductions in the use of combustible tobacco products, which remain by far the leading preventable cause of cancer and preventable death in the United States."

Landmark Long-Term Study on Vaping by Never-Smokers Finds No Negative Health Impacts

Despite fears of activists, no harm seen after three and a half years of vaping
LONDON, ENGLAND -- In a first of its kind long-term study published in the journal Nature, researchers have found no negative health impacts from the daily use of electronic cigarettes by young adult never-smokers.

Researchers from the University of Catania, led by Dr. Riccardo Polosa, tracked nine electronic cigarette users with no history of smoking, as well as twelve lifetime non-smokers and non-vapers, over the course of three and a half years. The researchers found no impact on a variety of health outcomes, including blood pressure, heart rate, lung function, exhaled breath nitric oxide, exhaled carbon monoxide, and CT scans of the lungs.

“In spite of previous health scares, our study shows for the first time no risk in long-term vapers who have never smoked in their life,” said Polosa, who presented the study at the fifth annual E-Cigarette Summit in the United Kingdom on Friday, November 17th.

Polosa notes that while even longer-term research is needed to rule out any possible negative impacts, changes in spirometry and CT scans can be seen in young smokers after approximately two years of cigarette usage. With the vapers, no signs of lung damage, including COPD, lipoid pneumonia, and popcorn lung, were found in CT scans, even among the study participants with the highest consumption of e-liquid.

In the United States, far less than 1% of adult never-smokers are current vapers, with an even smaller proportion reporting vaping daily, according to the CDC’s 2015 National Health Interview Survey. Despite this, much of the concern in the media and scientific circles revolve around fears of the impact of vaping on nonsmokers.

“Mouse and cell studies may generate salacious headlines about the supposed dangers of vaping, but they are no replacement for studies on actual humans,” said Gregory Conley, President of the American Vaping Association, a nonprofit that advocates for truthful information about vapor products. “If no negative health impacts can be seen from daily vaping among those who previously did not smoke, how is it ethical to continue warning smokers away from using these products?”

In addition to this groundbreaking research, Polosa also recently published a review of the evidence on the impact of vapor products on COPD patients.

Major U.S. Study: Vaping Could Save 6.6 Million American Smokers

Even under worse case assumptions, vaping still saves lives, finds multi-university research study
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In what could turn out to be a transformative moment in the debate over vaping in America, a research team led by investigators from Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is now estimating that vaping could save the lives of up to 6.6 million U.S. smokers over the next 10 years. On the basis of this evidence, the researchers are recommending that public health organizations adopt a strategy of encouraging smokers to switch to vaping to hasten the decline of America’s smoking rate.
Published in the journal Tobacco Control, the study is the first to model the best and worst case outcomes of U.S. smokers switching to vaping. In establishing their variables, the researchers considered a range of factors, including differing estimates on the relative harm of vapor products versus cigarettes, as well as the impact of vaping on cessation, switching, and initiation, including by nonusers.
In the most pessimistic scenario tested by the researchers, a strategy of replacing cigarettes with vaping is calculated to save 1.6 million lives, or 160,000 lives per year. (Read Reuters' report on the study).
"Even the gloomiest analysis shows a significant gain in years of life if nicotine is obtained from vaping instead of much more deadly amount of toxicants inhaled with cigarette smoke," said David Levy, a lead researcher and professor of oncology at Georgetown Lombardi. "Old policies need to be supplemented with policies that encourage substituting e-cigarettes for the far more deadly cigarettes."
The study, which involved researchers from Georgetown University, Yale University, the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and others, was funded by the National Institutes of Health. In total, the researchers conclude that as many as 86.7 million years of life could be gained by smokers who make the switch during the ten year period modeled in the study.
Gregory Conley, President of the American Vaping Association, a nonprofit that champions vaping for smokers looking to quit, commented on the implications of the study:
“This study could represent a seismic shift in the way the FDA and public health groups look at vaping. For years, harm reduction advocates have relied on quality research from independent European researchers and non-government organizations, only to be told that such research was somehow not trustworthy because the authors were not American. Now, we have some of the most respected American researchers in the field of tobacco control explaining in detail how vaping can and will save lives.”
“If there is a fault with this research, it is that it assumes that a functional vaping market will still exist in a decade. Unless FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb acts to reform the FDA’s outdated tobacco regulatory system, over 99% of vapor products could be banned in or before 2022. We are hopeful that studies like this will give Gottlieb the confidence he needs to truly modernize the way FDA regulates smoke-free nicotine products."
Other research highlights from this week
  • Banning e-cigarette flavors, with or without a corresponding ban on menthol cigarettes, could harm public health by discouraging adult smokers from quitting. That is according to research conducted by the Yale School of Public Health and the Centre for Health Policy at the Imperial College in London, the results of which are being distributed the National Bureau of Economic Research. (MarketWatch coverage).
  • Among young adults in the Chicago area, e-cigarette use was not associated with later cigarette smoking, according to research published by the journal Addiction
